A Guide to Understanding Solar Trackers

As the demand for solar energy continues to increase, the efficiency of solar panels has become more and more important as solar technology is developed. One key method for maximizing energy capture in solar panels is through the use of solar trackers. Solar trackers adjust the position of solar panels throughout the day to follow the sun's trajectory, ensuring that the panels receive the maximum possible sunlight. Listed below are the different types of solar trackers and how they work.

  • Horizontal Single-Axis Solar Tracker (HSAT): A solar system that rotates from east to west to follow the Sun through the sky.

  • Horizontal Tilted Single-Axis Solar Tracker (HTSAT): This uses the same process as HSAT’s but instead it is tilted towards the north or south. This is commonly done in the solar industry because the Sun is slightly south from right above us due to the US being in the Northern hemisphere. These require a sturdy foundation.

  • Vertical Single-Axis Solar Tracker (VSAT): These are usually found in the northern regions. These rotate east to west as well but on a vertical axis. The benefits of these are that they maintain a constant angle of incidence no matter how low the sun is in the sky. Due to its height, it needs a very sturdy foundation so that it does not blow over.

  • Dual-Axis Solar Tracking System: Having two axes to rotate on allows the panels to be in the most optimal position to obtain sunlight. These Trackers are less reliable and have a shorter lifespan than others.

  • Passive Trackers: They use a compressed gas/fluid with a low boiling point that causes an imbalance that causes the track to move.
