Innovations in Solar Technology

The world of solar technology is developing rapidly with advancements transforming how we capture and utilize solar energy. Since 2010, efficiency has increased from 15% to over 25%, while researchers have been able to create efficiencies of up to 47%. Listed below are a few of the driving innovations that have increased the efficiency, visual appeal, and accessibility of solar energy.

Solar Shingles: Solar shingles are thin layers of solar cells that are embedded directly into the surface of traditional roof shingles. While this is the most visually appealing advancement of solar technology, it also turns rooftops into efficient solar power generators.

Solar Embedded Glass: This innovation incorporates transparent solar cells and light-selective coating to transform ordinary windows into solar panels.

Perovskite Solar Cells: In June 2016, researchers at Manchester University in England unveiled perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which utilize a special crystalline structure to achieve higher efficiencies than most traditional solar cells. Even though they aren’t as consistent as Gallium Arsenide solar cells, they represent a significant breakthrough with their potential for high efficiency and lower production costs.

Sun-Tracking Solar Cells: These cells are designed to follow the sun’s path across the sky, capturing about 40% more energy than stationary solar panels and maximizing energy absorption throughout the day.

Printable Solar Cells: These cells can be printed onto plastic sheets, rolled up, and easily set up on-site. This approach offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for deploying solar energy, particularly in remote or temporary locations.
