Solar Outpaces All Energy Sources in 2023

Even though the solar industry is relatively young among all other energy source giants, all people around the world already can see solar energy’s ambition. According to data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), solar energy accounted for 49.3% of new domestic generating capacity in the United States in 2023, surpassing all other energy sources. Solar capacity additions in 2023 increased by 50% compared to the previous year. The total solar capacity added to the grid in 2023 was 18,356 MW. In comparison, natural gas added 11,024 MW and wind added 6,356 MW to the grid. For the full 12 months of 2023, renewables provided more than two-thirds (67.2%) of all new generating capacity, trailed by natural gas (29.6%) and nuclear power (3.0%). There were small contributions from oil (64 MW), geothermal (48 MW), biomass (35 MW), and waste heat (31 MW). No new coal capacity was reported. Most importantly, if the growth trends of 2023 continue, installed utility-scale solar capacity should exceed that of nuclear power (8%) within the next few months. Solar capacity is also likely to exceed the individual capacities of both wind and coal within the next three years.

It is our responsibility as humans to take care of our environment and prevent climate change from worsening in the near future.
