Solar can promote biocrust formation in deserts

When it comes to the environment, solar energy is more than just a great way to power our homes and businesses, it can also help promote biocrust formation in deserts! According to a study from the University of California, Davis, solar energy can help support the growth of biocrusts, which are a layer of organisms that form on desert soils and help them retain moisture and nutrients.

"Biocrusts are essential components of desert ecosystems," said lead researcher Dr. Rachel Vannette in a statement. "They keep the soil in place and create an environment that supports higher plants, which in turn support wildlife. We wanted to know if solar energy could be used to promote biocrust formation, and our study suggests that it can."

The researchers studied the effects of solar energy on biocrusts in a solar energy research field in California's Mojave Desert. They found that areas with solar energy had more biocrusts than areas without. The results suggest that solar energy can be used to promote biocrust formation in desert areas, which could be a great way to help protect and preserve these fragile ecosystems.
